Cooperation on Research will be Initiated Between BEU Obesity and Diabetes Application and Research Center and Oxford University Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

Rector of Bülent Ecevit University, Prof. Dr. Mahmut Özer, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. K. Varım Numanoğlu and Dean of Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Taner Bayraktaroğlu who were in London, capital of England, for a series of meetings visited Oxford Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology& Metabolism (OCDEM) of Oxford University which is among the leading higher education institutions of the world.

During the visit, Prof. Fredrik Karpe who is the head of OCDEM and academic staff of Oxford Pembroke College Department of Metabolic Medicine accompanied the BEU team in their tour of the center and provided detailed information about the studies conducted. The team had a tour of various departments of the center including clinic research units, general endocrinology and diabetes and obesity labs.

After the tour, Prof. Jeremy W. Tomlinson who conducted endocrinology research in the center provided extensive information about his recent research. After that, Mrs. Sue Beatty who is the head nurse at the clinic research unit did a presentation on the organisation of the unit. After that, another presentation was conducted by head of the center, Prof. Karpe on design and conduction of translational studies.

During the visit, Rector Özer stressed that Bülent Ecevit University Obesity and Diabetes Application and Research Center is the first independent state center of its kind and summarized the aims and how these aims are going to be attained. Prof. Özer who stressed that research dimension of the center was especially important indicated that their aim was to turn the center into a center of excellence for Turkey. Prof. Özer also indicated that in fulfilling its aims of BEU obesity and diabetes center, cooperation with OCDEM was quite significant. During the visit, the decision to conduct joint studies with OCDEM was taken.

Prof. Dr. Mahmut Özer who published a declaration about the visit stated: “As widely known, serving the society is among the priorities of our university. In this respect, we have established the Obesity and Diabetes Application and Research Center to conduct research on diabetes and obesity which are among the leading health problems of the population in Western Black Sea Region. Our center on which massive investments have been made is the first state center of its kind and the only one with a separate building. In order to enhance the quality of service of our center which is soon going to start serving the region, we want to benefit from international experiences. Our visit to Oxford University Obesity and Diabetes Center has been quite beneficial for us. We aim to conduct joint research and shape our applications at our center benefiting from the valuable experiences of OCDEM which is one of the most significant centers of its kind in the world.”
